UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA (UC)

The University of California is the world's leading public research university system. It is comprised of 9 undergraduate campuses (Berkeley, Davis, Irvine, Los Angeles, Merced, San Diego, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz, and Riverside) with a total enrollment of over 250, 000. Nearly a third of entering UC undergrads are transfer students, demonstrating UC’s commitment to providing higher education opportunities to California Community College students.

Minimum Requirements for Transfer Admission

Complete at least 60 semester units of UC-transferable credit which include:

  • Two transferable courses in English composition (IGETC Area 1A & 1B).

  • One transferable course in mathematical concepts and quantitative reasoning (IGETC Area 2).

  • Four transferable college courses chosen from at least two of the following subject areas:

    • Arts & Humanities (IGETC Area 3)
    • Social & Behavioral Sciences (IGETC Area 4)
    • Physical & Biological Sciences (IGETC Area 5)
  • A minimum 2.4 GPA in UC-transferable courses (2.8 if you're a nonresident). Though this is the minimum, keep in mind that most majors and campuses require a higher GPA for admission selection.
  • Major Preparation: At most campuses, you are required to complete a mimimum set of lower-division courses for your major before you transfer.

UC TAP is a valuable online tool to help prospective UC transfer students track and plan their coursework. Students considering a UC are highly encouraged to create a TAP account as soon as they begin coursework at LACC.

IGETC is a series of courses certified by a California Community College that you may complete in order to satisfy general education requirements at UC.

LACC IGETC (2020- 2021 Form)

Note: Some majors – such as engineering or the biological, physical and natural sciences –do not recommend IGETC. Additionally, UC San Diego's Eleanor Roosevelt and Revelle Colleges and UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business do not accept IGETC.

Review campus guidance for IGETC

Assist.org provides a list of courses available at a California Community College that can be used to fulfill lower-division major preparation requirements at a UC campus. The completion of major preparation courses is key to being competitive for admission to a UC.

It is highly recommended that you complete as many - if not all - major prep courses that are articulated for your major. Although you may be able to transfer without completing all lower-division major prep courses, some campuses have specific minimum major requirements that must be completed in order to be considered for admission.

If you know which major you want to study, but you’re unsure of what UC campus you want to apply to, review the Transfer Pathways to view a list of common major preparation courses for 20 of the most popular majors at UC.

UC grants credit for College Board Advanced Placement examinations on which a student scores a 3 or higher.

AP exams can also be used to meet transfer admission subject requirements in English Composition, Math as well as courses in the humanities, behavioral/social sciences and biological/physical sciences.
