This Week @ City - November 7th
Good Monday morning,
I hope you all set your clocks back yesterday so you did not arrive an hour early this morning. If you forgot, thank you for the extra time. I am in Poughkeepsie, New York, this morning at a special convening of some community colleges from around the country at Vassar College. They have a transfer preparation program for community college students, so our Transfer Center Counselor, Charnnel Ellis is here with me. I will return to campus on Wednesday. Dr. Lancaster is Acting President for me.
Vote at LACC
Election day is tomorrow, November 8, 2022. LACC is a polling place again. Please vote, and please encourage your students to vote. Any LA County voters can vote at any LA County polling place – so feel free to cast your vote at LACC. Four of our LACCD Board of Trustees members are up for election.
Measure LA
Measure LA is on your ballot! As we have seen, prior bonds have allowed us to build beautiful new buildings that have made LA City College an even better place for students to further their education. Measure LA is a new $5.3 billion bond measure on the ballot this fall that would allow for further investment in our campus. Specifically, this bond, if it passes, would allow us to invest in things like upgraded information technology, renovations to our athletic fields, improved sustainability like energy efficient LED lighting, basic but important infrastructure needs, as well as allowing us to renovate older buildings like our Chemistry, Life Science, and Kinesiology South buildings at a cost to homeowners of no more than 25 dollars per $100,000 of assessed – not market – property value. Ballots are being mailed now, so be sure to find Measure LA and vote!
Veterans Day Holiday
This week is a short week because of the Veterans Day holiday on Friday. If you know a vet, be sure to thank her/him for their service. We will have an event for our Vets on Thursday to honor them.
Pop-up Food Pantry
Today we have our “Pop-up Food Pantry” outside the Student Union starting at 11am until all of the food runs out. Please let your students know.
Dia de Los Muertos
Our Dia de Los Muertos event last week was a hit! We had over 1,000 people participate in activities over the two-day period. Thank you to professor Carlos Guerrero and is team for a spectacular event.
