This Week @ City - March 27, 2023
Good Monday morning,
We are just one week away from Spring Break! Short weeks this week and next week. This Thursday, March 30, is a non-instructional day – no classes are being held, but the campus is open. Friday, March 31 is a holiday to honor Cesar Chavez. Spring Break begins on Saturday, April 1. Friday, April 7 is a half-day-off holiday for the Friday of Spring Break. We begin late start classes on Monday, April 10.
Our Midterm Meals program runs through Wednesday, March 29. This program offers a free $15 Cub Store credit for the first 500 enrolled students each day (Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday). LACC student ID is required. Please let your students know.
This week we will be hosting Senior City Days on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and will bring more than 1,000 high school students to the LACC campus.
Our segment on Cubby’s Closet that we filmed last week will air this Tuesday, March 28 at approximately 6:20am and then throughout the day on Spectrum news. Our live broadcast on CBS news local morning show featuring Cubby’s Closet is scheduled for this Wednesday, March 29. We will be featured on live segments at approximately 7:30am, 8:30am, 9:30am and 10:30am. I encourage everyone to see if they have slightly used or new items to donate and bring them to Cubby’s in the Student Union, second floor, Monday through Thursday from 12noon to 2pm. You can also donate money. Please go to the Foundation webpage and click on the “Donate” button, put in the amount you want to donate, and indicate that it is for Cubby’s Closet. Also, please remember that our home insecure students need toiletries, so, if you stay at hotels, please bring home the room shampoo, soap, and body washes to donate. We will be opening an extension to Cubby’s offering frozen food and staple grocery items soon.
Dr. Helen Benjamin will visit LACC this Tuesday to speak and chat with students. Dr. Benjamin is author of “How We Got Over: Growing Up in the Segregated South.”
March is Women’s History Month and we will have our districtwide Annual Women’s History Month Afternoon Tea this Wednesday, March 29, from 2pm to 4pm. The theme this year is “Women Who Tell Our Stories.” We have invited our four LACCD Trustees who are women to join us as our special keynote speakers this year. These four women, Board First Vice President Henderson, Board Second Vice President Iino, Trustee Hernandez, and Trustee Hoffman, now have the majority vote on our LACCD Board of Trustees.
Congratulations to student Harrison Hallow who has been accepted into the NASA Community College Aerospace Scholars (NCAS) program. He earned a five-day virtual experience spot this week. As a highly competitive program, NCAS gives scholars the opportunity to interact and network with NASA engineers and scientists. NCAS can become a stepping stone for a future career in STEM.
