This Week @ City - August 28, 2023
Dear LACC Family,
As the summer comes to a close and we prepare to begin fall semester today, I want to welcome you all back to LACC.
Campus was closed last Monday due to Tropical Storm Hilary. I want to thank our diligent Facilities staff for their preventative prep work resulting in no major damage to the campus.
I want to thank all of you who helped plan our Fall Convocation last Thursday, especially Dr. Shae Hsieh. We had a full house, lots of fun activities and I enjoyed meeting everyone in person. Chancellor Rodriguez joined us for our ice cream social and posed for photos with faculty and staff. We also raffled off prizes in recognition of longevity.
We are fortunate to welcome 35 new full time faculty members this academic year, whose diverse areas of expertise will build upon the dedication to excellence in teaching that characterizes our LACC campus. I am also excited to welcome all our new classified professionals and managers to the campus and look forward to meeting those that I have not met yet.
LACC’s Welcome Week begins today! We will be offering extended hours in many of our Student Services Offices, both in-person and online. Please let your students know. Special hours this week include Monday – Thursday, 8am to 7pm; Friday 8am to 4pm and special Saturday hours next week on September 2 from 9am to 1pm.
I want to thank Dr James Lancaster for all the dedicated work he has done to help LACC shine as an educational institution and a beacon in the community. To celebrate him and his new endeavors, we are holding a special celebration for Jim on Thursday, August 31 at 12:30 p.m. in the Student Union 3rd floor multi-Purpose Room. Be on the lookout for a separate email with details.
After an internal search, I am pleased to announce that Dean Vi Ly will be the new interim Vice President of Academic Affairs. Dr. Ly will take over the role from Dr. Jim Lancaster beginning September 1.
I am deeply grateful to each of you for your contributions and extraordinary dedication to our students and I am honored to be a part of such a remarkable and talented community. I am excited to work with you in continuing to create transformative opportunities for our students.
Have an amazing first day and week of the fall semester! Go Cubs!
Dr. Amanuel Gebru
President
