This Week @ City - April 24, 2023
Good Monday Morning
Today, Monday April 24, we reflect on the first genocide of the 20th century, the Armenian Genocide. In 1915, one and half million Armenians were deported and massacred by the Turkish Ottoman Empire. We mourn the terrible loss of so many lives and extend sympathy to the survivors and their descendants for the hardships they suffered. Today we stand with the Armenian people in recognizing the tragedy of the Meds Yeghern "Great Crime" and we reaffirm our commitment to a peaceful, democratic, inclusive, and prosperous community. This afternoon, The American Genocide Committee, www.agc1915.org, is hosting a AGC Community Wide Public Event at 4:30pm at Glendale City Hall, located at 613 E. Broadway in Glendale.
This week is Black Student Success Week and we will be hosting #TheBlackHour from April 24 to April 28. The daily virtual webinars offer practitioners an outlet to discuss topics that are important to Black student success. Please let our students know to register at https://linktr.ee/cablackstudents.
This Thursday, April 27, we will hold four public forums for our LACC presidential candidate finalists. Staff, faculty, and students can attend in person in Recital Hall 210 in the Herb Alpert Music Center (The Music Building) or watch live on YouTube. The forums begin at 9am and end at 11:45am. As an important next step, we invite faculty, staff, and students to email suggested forum questions to be asked of each finalist at the upcoming public forums. Please email no more than three (3) suggested forum questions to our search consultant Stan Carrizosa, @email, no later than 3pm on Tuesday, April 25th 2023.
The questions will be reviewed, vetted, and compiled by the Community College Search Services (CCSS), as well as District EEO and HR Leadership. We anticipate receiving a larger number of questions that can be asked during the 30-minute session per candidate, but we will work to ensure that there is broad-based representation in the questions asked by topic which will reflect the priorities of constituent groups and our diverse stakeholders. The names and bios of the presidential finalists, the link for live streaming, and additional information about the forums are forthcoming.
Also, this week kicks off our World Music Festival Series with Orkestar Mézé on April 25 at 7:30pm.
This Wednesday, April 26 is Denim Day. Please wear denim in recognition and support of survivors of sexual assault.
We had another great Earth Day event last week. On Thursday, April 20, we held our Annual Earth Day Celebration event in the “park” by The City’s Garden. The event brought together hundreds of people for education, fun, food and entertainment. Everyone had a chance to get a plant of their own as well. Thank you to Professor Phommasaysy for another wonderful event, in partnership with Professor Stafsky from the Dietetics program - I understand the sugar-free popsicles were very popular! Thank you also to our great partners Children’s Hospital and Two-Bit Circus Foundation.
Mark your calendars for two upcoming Guardian Scholars/Next Up events for National Foster Care Awareness (NFCAM) month in May. On May 3, a NFCAM kick-off event will take place with Dee Hankins, a former foster youth and renowned motivational speaker, as our keynote speaker. Food will be served for campus and community members. On May 11 and 17, we will be holding Foster Youth Alley Training for staff, faculty, and stakeholders. The event will be held via Zoom and archived in the VRC for faculty and staff.
