Good Monday morning,
Our spring semester rolls on. Our headcount is up 7% over last year in spring. After falling below 13,000 in headcount last spring, now we are up over 13,000 again. We are fifth in the district in headcount this term. All your work and diligence is helping our students to fully re-engage with LACC to meet their goals and aspirations. Well done!
We are preparing for our summer and fall enrollment now and our outreach and recruitment folks are fully charged to bring students in to our great college. Last week our Financial Aid department held a big event on campus by the Student Union to answer questions from the hundreds of students who stopped by their tables in inquire about resources that could be available to them to help with the costs of college. The week before last, we about 900 high school students on campus over three days checking out classes, getting information on help for college, and seeing the vibrancy of LACC. The students were excited, and their counselors were, too! We are back in full force!
Our annual English/ESL Department writing contest is upon us. Students are invited to enter the English/ESL Department writing contest. The annual writing contest is for all students enrolled at the college during the spring semester of each school year. The English/ESL Department awards first, second, third and honorable mention scholarship prizes in the categories of short story, poetry, and ESL writing. Students must follow and adhere to the guidelines for each contest to be eligible. The deadline for Spring 2023 is tomorrow, April 18th by 12pm. Winners will be notified in early May and should plan on attending the Awards Ceremony scheduled at the end of the Spring semester on May 25th. This week we have two major events for Earth Day. We have our annual Earth Day Fair on Thursday, April 20 form 11:30am to 1:30pm in the City’s Garden area, next to the library. Professor Phommasaysy and his team, along with RESJ Faculty Coordinator Dylan Shields are planning the festivities to include food, games and prizes as we celebrate Earth Day! I heard Department Chair Wiesenfeld is also joining the group to have something from our art department. Also, our partner Two-bit Circus Foundation is also helping with the work they do in creatively recycling. I hope you can join us. Please see attached for the QR code for more details.
Today we have a mini retreat with our team from the Race, Equity, and Social Justice Steering Committee focused on the land acknowledgement that we are putting together. I will update you on the outcome next week.
And on Saturday, April 22, which is Earth Day 2023, the Los Angeles County Department of Arts and Culture, the Los Angeles City/County Native American Indian Commission and Creative Strategist Jacob Pratt (Dakota and Ojibway from Cote First Nation) are having a screening of Erasure from 5:30pm to 8:30pm on campus at LACC. Erasure is the story of three unique experiences of Native American people in Los Angeles being pushed aside or invisible to all but those who have lived it. This is an experience that will share the hardships, the challenges, and the victories that Native American people have had here in LA County. This event is the culmination of Jacob’s year-long Creative Strategist residency. The goal of Jacob’s residency with the LANAIC was to develop and prototype ways to increase awareness and understanding of local tribes and the urban American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) community, especially their histories and cultural practices, to advance the County’s ongoing effort to undo their systemic erasure and to build and sustain trust between LA County and its AIAN community. This is a community event and all are welcome. It might be a good thing for the family to do on Saturday night.
Tomorrow, April 18, at 11:30am Eastern time (8:30 am Pacific time), the Federal Interagency Holocaust Remembrance Committee (FIHRC https://holocaustremembrance.org/) is hving a virtual event marking the 30th anniversary of the Holocaust Remembrance program. April 18 is also Holocaust Memorial Day (Yom Hashoah, in Hebrew) and is commemorated in special ceremonies across the globe. This year’s FIHRC program speakers will be Manny Mandel (https://encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/id-card/emanuel-manny-mandel) and Peter Gorog (https://www.ushmm.org/remember/holocaust-survivors/volunteers/peter-gorog), Holocaust survivors, and the moderator will be Eli Rosenbaum, Counselor for War Crimes Accountability, from the U.S. Department of Justice. The event is open to all via the committee’s webpage (https://holocaustremembrance.org/). Please share this learning opportunity with your networks and colleagues.
Last week we filmed segments for the Korean realty TV show “Korean Lunch Tray”, also known as “K-Lunch.” A special thank you to Professor Mickey Hong and to everyone who assisted and participated in the shoots. We will let you know when to tune into Netflix to watch the episodes.
Next week we will be hosting Black Success Week #TheBlackHour from April 24 to April 28. The daily virtual webinar offers practitioners an outlet to discuss topics that are important to Black student success. We will be sending out an email to register for the webinars.
