English & ESL Department Scholarships

Each year, the English & ESL Department honors several outstanding English and ESL students with scholarship awards at our annual Awards Ceremony.

NOTE: Please visit this webpage again in March 2025 for information about applying for our Spring 2025 scholarships.

Important Information

  • Each spring semester, LACC’s English & ESL Department offers a number of scholarship awards to recognize and honor our outstanding students. The scholarships are cash awards.

  • The scholarships are designed to encourage a wide range of students to apply, specifically those who want to incorporate the knowledge they have acquired in their English classes in their future careers.
  • Special consideration is given to English and ESL students whose ambitions include teaching, writing, higher-level education, literary studies, and social work that promotes the empowerment of diverse people and communities.

In order to apply, click on the scholarships below and review the following:

  1. The criteria needed to apply.
  2. The Scholarship Application Form that the student should submit online or print out, fill in, and submit to the English & ESL Department.
  3. The essay requirement. The topic for the essay can be found near the end of the application form.
  4. Request for unofficial transcripts.

  • The deadline for submitting your 2024 scholarship application and the documents you need to attach is Monday, May 6, at 5pm.
  • You can also submit your application one of two ways:
    1. Submit online using the clickable link on each scholarship below.
    2. Submit in-person by printing and bringing your application to the front desk of the English/ESL Department in Jefferson Hall 301.
  • In addition to the written application requirements, finalists will need to attend a Zoom interview on Friday, May 10th. The Zoom interview is a required part of the application process.
  • Scholarship winners will be invited to attend the English & ESL Department's Annual Awards Ceremony, which will take place on the evening of May 16th on the third floor of the Student Union Building. This ceremony is a celebration of our students, at which time winners of Scholarship Awards and winners of the Writing Contest are presented with their prizes and congratulated by the college community.

The Agnes Partin Memorial Scholarship

As a professor with unwavering progressive and feminist principles, Agnes Partin’s calling was to aid women in their search for meaningful work and fulfilling lives. She also provided invaluable support to prospective teachers.

The Agnes Partin Memorial Scholarship awards $250 to an outstanding student who plans to pursue a career related to the field of English. Although all who meet the following criteria are invited to apply, preference will be given to those who intend to pursue a career in teaching English.

  1. Be taking or have taken English 101.
  2. Have a 3.4 GPA with a minimum 30 units taken at Los Angeles City College.
  3. Plan to transfer.
  4. Be currently enrolled in at least six units at Los Angeles City College.

The Boyd Collins Memorial Scholarship

Hired in 1957 and working as a Professor at LACC into the 1990s, Boyd Collins is remembered for his kindness to students and conviviality with faculty.

The Boyd Collins Memorial Scholarship awards $250 to an outstanding student of English. Although all who meet the following criteria are invited to apply, preference will be given to those who intend to major in English.

  1. Be taking or have taken English 102 or any second-year literature course.
  2. Have a 3.4 GPA with a minimum 30 units taken at Los Angeles City College.
  3. Plan to transfer.
  4. Be currently enrolled in at least six units at Los Angeles City College.

The Charles Davis Memorial Scholarship

An accomplished musician who found inspiration in California’s coastline, Charles Davis was known for his knowledge of Zora Neale Hurston and Kahlil Gibran, and he is remembered for his kindness toward students.

The Charles David Memorial Scholarship awards $250 to an outstanding student of English. Although all who meet the following criteria are invited to apply, preference will be given to those who intend to pursue a literary career.

  1. Be taking or have taken English 101.
  2. Have a 3.3 GPA with a minimum 30 units taken at Los Angeles City College.
  3. Plan to transfer.
  4. Be currently enrolled in at least six units at Los Angeles City College.

The Miriam Kirshenbaum Cassyd Memorial Scholarship

Miriam Kirshenbaum Cassyd’s mission was to encourage students who were called to social activism.

The Miriam Kirshenbaum Cassyd Memorial Scholarship awards $250 to an outstanding female student of English who plans to pursue a career related to social justice and helping the underprivileged. All who meet the following criteria are invited to apply.

  1. Be taking or have taken English 101 or above.
  2. Have a 3.0 GPA with a minimum 12 units taken at Los Angeles City College.
  3. Preference will be given to students who plan to transfer, but is not required.
  4. Be currently enrolled in at least six units at Los Angeles City College.

The Kathy Chatterton Memorial Scholarship

A former Chair of the Developmental English Department (now ESL), Kathy Chatterton was a vocal advocate for English Language Learners.

The Kathy Chatterton Memorial Scholarship awards $250 to an outstanding ESL student who is currently enrolled in either ESL Level 8 or 110 at Los Angeles City College.

  1. Be recommended by an ESL faculty member.
  2. Plan to graduate from LACC or transfer to a four-year college or university.
  3. Plan to enter a career or profession.
  4. Have completed at least 12 units of ESL.
  5. Be currently enrolled in at least six units of either ESL Level 8 or 110.

For in-person submissions, print and complete the Kathy Chatterton Scholarship Application.

The Robert Rangel Memorial Scholarship

Robert Rangel is remembered for his impact on ESL students, who saw him as a caring and supportive ally.

The Robert Rangel Memorial Scholarship awards $250 to an outstanding ESL student who is currently enrolled in either ESL Level 5 or 6 at Los Angeles City College.

  1. Be recommended by an ESL faculty member.
  2. Have completed at least six units of ESL at LACC.
  3. Be currently enrolled in at least six units of either ESL Level 5 or 6.

The Mary Hsia Memorial Scholarship

Mary Hsia was a professor of developmental studies and ESL who was cherished by her students. An avid tuba player, she mentored young musicians and played locally, including with the tuba/euphonium ensemble at Pasadena City College. She is remembered for her love of cats and dogs and her generous friendships.

A scholarship award of $250 will be given to an outstanding ESL student who is currently enrolled in either ESL Level 3 or 4 at Los Angeles City College.

  1. Be recommended by an ESL faculty member.
  2. Be currently enrolled in at least 6 units of either ESL 3 or 4.
