Ralph Bunche Scholars (Honors)

RBS is a program requiring at least an entire year at LACC, during which students take four or five classes as "honors." Also, there are opportunities for presenting research, as well as access to scholarships. Succeeding in the program greatly increases students' chances at being accepted to elite colleges and universities.

RB Scholars who certify receive priority consideration at UCLA, Chapman University, Loyola Marymount University, Occidental College, Pomona College, and many other transfer partners through the Honors Transfer Council of California.

To Certify in the Program, Students Must:

  • Complete 15 units of honors classes: at least 4 classes (for STEM majors) or 5 classes (for all other majors)
  • Earn a 3.3 cumulative GPA or higher
  • Participate in community service (30 hours)
  • Have written a university-level research essay

It is best for Scholars to finish all requirements within two years. There are only sometimes limited honors classes available in summer and winter.

Note: It is possible to be part of RBS even if students are not seeking to certify. Please consult with the program director (see below).

Honors Academic Counseling

All current RB Scholars have access to academic counseling through the RBS Program. It is highly recommended that you meet with an academic counselor once per semester. The honors counselor can assist you with course planning to meet honors and transfer program requirements.

Appointments are available for the following services: Evaluation of coursework for completion of transfer requirements and/or Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT) | Transcript Evaluation for non-LACCD coursework | Update/Revise Education Plan (SEP) | Review UC TAG requirements and eligibility
